BYOB: Thursday May 30, 6-8pm
Support Local! Our theme for this BYOB (Bring Your Own Bread/Bottle/Or Just Yourself) Happy Hour is go local and so sensory. Our neighbors, Les Voleurs, the Wine Thieves, will be pouring. On the olive oil side, we'll host a blind olive oil tasting and investigate your sensory prowess. Of course, we'll have our customary bites and beverages. Here's a bit about the Theives...
"Our grapes are appropriated from some of Sonoma’s best vineyards  Hand picked in the cool of night, the grapes are secreted away to our urban winery in historic San Francisco. We ferment the grapes in small barrel lots with minimal intervention to preserve each vineyard’s unique character. The finished wine is then held up for months until we think it’s ready. All this, so we can smuggle our artisanal stash of bottles into the hands of merry moonlighters and party prowlers who love a good score."

Our Story: Mary and Janell

Once we tried truly fresh extra virgin olive oils we were shocked at what we thought was extra virgin and what we were used to using in our kitchen. Thus began an adventure of education and connection into this whole new world - of the old world - of olive oil. Both owners are native San Franciscan/Bay Area folks with a passion for food, travel, and community. Noe Valley was a perfect neighborhood to introduce the FIRST tasting bar of this sort in the City to fellow San Franciscans and beyond.

But our story doesn't really start there. For Mary, the story of how she got interested in olive oil begins as a child growing up in the Outer Mission of San Francisco with her grandparents. Both her grandparents were from Europe, grandma from Spain and grandpa from Yugoslavia. Grandpa was a proud man and a wonderful cook. He always wore a suit and tie topped off with a fedora. At home he didn't talk much, but boy could he cook. And he cooked with olive oil. His large can of olive oil was precious to him, so precious that he didn't share it with anyone else in the house and kept it hidden in his bedroom. When he came home from work, he'd remove his hat and tie, disappear in the bedroom for a while and reemerge with his coveted tin of olive oil ready to prepare his evening meal. It was tradition.

Janell has a different story, not rooted in the neighborhood, but far-flung and varied. She arrived at the same place as Mary appreciating and connecting to olive oil; its stories, history, flavors, and many uses through her adventures living and traveling abroad. Growing up in the suburbs of San Francisco in Sonoma County, Janell was raised on the comfort and flavor of butter and Wesson oil(!). Not until she began traveling to the Meditterranean and beyond did she begin to experience the depth and breadth of olive oil. Her first strongest memory of 'sharing' this liquid gold was in Greece, Northern Greece, on a small island with her Greek friend, Antigone. They were visiting Antigone's childhood friends that she hadn't seen in a long time, and every place they went olive oil was the center of the occasion. One particular time she remembers sitting outdoors with a group of women in the warm late afternoon sun laughing and talking - a group of new and old friends. There was a large ceramic bowl in the middle of everyone full of fresh cucumbers, bright tomatoes, red onions, black olives, sweet oregano and, of course, copious amounts of olive oil. They passed crusty rustic bread around the circle, pulling off chunks of the hearty substance dipping it lavishly into this salad which was the epicenter of their circle. That was the meal - fresh, flavorful, full of family and friends. She's been intrigued every since.

Together Mary and Janell wish to offer the same feelings of family, community, and health that they have experienced in the old ways and days to their new community via Olive This Olive That. Please come join them.
